The City of Johannesburg is insourcing security guards and cleaning services in the government departments. City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba said in 2018, there were 2800 security guards insourced in various departments in the City of Johannesburg.
“Their payment was minimum of 50% while offering employees benefits, stable employment and containing City’s escalating security costs. The programme has been a major success and the city guarded its infrastructure, which suffered from theft and vandalism running into the hundreds of million rands. The City will deliver appointment letters to remaining security guards which were employed at announcement time in May 2017 to be insourced on 1 July 2019”, he said.
Mashaba added that the programme has brought dignity to security personnel in the City by improving their lives.
“Previously companies were paid R12 000 for each guard it provided and guards received R4 00 per month. The City is also ready to insource cleaners. Cleaners should also go home with better payment, employment benefits and containing the costs of escalating contractual services for ratepayers. Cleaning services will be insourced on 1 July 2019 and about 1 500 families benefiting from the program”, he said.
Mashaba said insourcing is achieving tangible benefits to thousands of families where more households will enjoy income and demonstrates its success.
“More funding can be directed to the service delivery needs of communities as the costs are extracted in the City of Johannesburg”, said Mashaba.
