A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder after a 21-year-old man was fatally stabbed during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe, Cullinan, on September 1.
The victim has been identified as Tshepang Nyathi.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk confirmed that the incident occurred at around 15:57 on Liphiri Street, a public road in Extension 3, Refilwe, Cullinan, where the victim was celebrating with friends.
According to police, the altercation began after water was poured on a passer-by who refused to take part in the activity.
“They came across a man who refused to play along. An argument started as the passer-by did not want to get wet. [The passer-by] took out a knife from his back pocket and stabbed the victim on the left side of the upper body,” Van Dyk said.
Van Dyk confirmed that the victim died while being transported to the hospital.
Following the stabbing, the suspect was assaulted by community members and later sought medical treatment at Dark City Clinic in Ekangala.
“The suspect was traced at Ekangala Clinic where he was arrested,” Van Dyk said.
He said the suspect has been charged with murder and is expected to appear in court soon.
Following the incident, community members have expressed concern over the dangers of splashing water during Spring Day celebrations, urging parents to discourage young people from behaviour that could lead to conflict and violence.
