Five Zimbabwean and two South African prisoners escaped from remand prison in Modimolle, Limpopo.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the police launched a manhunt for these prisoners.
“They broke their cells at around 8:00pm during police routine service. We are still investigating how they escaped the prison. The prisoners are identified as Philani Ndebele, Themba Ncube who are Zimbabweans, and Thapelo Mello who is a South African national. The trio were charged for contravening sections of explosives Act”, he said.
This incident follows two months after other Zimbabweans with South Africans escaped from Kutuma Sinthumule Correctional Centre, outside Makhado town in Limpopo. They escaped after scaling the roof of police van while on the way for trial. They were later arrested in Ivory Park Gauteng. Their names are Chris Faku, Jabulani Isaak Mahlangu from Pretoria in Gauteng Province.
“Others are Ntshengedzeni Manukha from Thohoyandou, Ntshavheni Thomas from Riverside, Raphael Nyota, Justice Makamo from Zimbabwe and Phathutshedzo Namadodzi from Dididi village outside Thohoyandou”, said Ngoepe.
