Tiger Brands faces another round of litigation from listeriosis claimants. The company have since been on the spotlight since the Department of Health traced the outbreak to the company’s cold meat plant.
In December 2018, the south Gauteng High Court granted certification for a class action lawsuit. Certification is a legal process authorizing different categories of complainants.
The next step of this case where those affected by the deadly bacteria are invited to be part of the civil suit took place on Monday (April, 15).
The liability phase requires claimants to prove Tiger Brand’s liability for harm, including death. Between 2017 and 2018, over 1,000 people contracted listeriosis, resulting in 218 deaths. Nearly 100 of those who died were newborns.
