Promoting good oral health for the community

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University Oral Health Sciences students recently offered free dental service to empower individuals to maintain a healthymouth at all ages at Wonderpark Mall in Pretoria North. The free service is part of their community outreach, in celebration of the annual World Oral Health Awareness Day.

Hundreds of community members were scanned and advised on how to prevent and control oral diseases as well as the good oral hygiene practices that should be followed by adults and children, enabling them to avoid any unnecessary pain and ultimately enjoy a better quality of life into old age.

Chairperson of the School of Oral Health Sciences Amukelani Ngobene said the day was aimed at providing oral health education and awareness as well as giving back to the communities they serve at SMU Oral Health Centre. “The initiative also helped us to build up a patient’s database for students to use for the purpose of their clinical teaching and training.

We didn’t have any signed and agreed partnership/s, however Colgate came through for us with stock which we used as give away prizes to the participants,” said Ngobene.
