Gauteng Legislature condemns killing of off-duty police officer and civilian in Tsakane

By Julia Moyo

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has expressed shock and concern following the murder of an off-duty police officer and a civilian in Tsakane on Monday night.

The committee said the incident highlights the ongoing challenge of violent crime in the province and the dangers faced by both law enforcement officers and ordinary residents. It described the killings as a senseless act of violence that has left two families mourning the loss of their loved ones.

According to the committee, the killing of a police officer is not only a tragedy for the families involved but also an attack on the institutions responsible for maintaining law and order. Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, Bandile Masuku, said, “The targeting of a police officer, whose constitutional duty is to serve, protect and safeguard communities, is an attack on the very institutions entrusted with maintaining peace, security and public order.”

Masuku added that such incidents demonstrate “a blatant disregard for human life and a dangerous lack of respect for the rule of law.” The committee expressed concern that attacks on members of the South African Police Service continue at a time when Gauteng is already facing a shortage of police personnel. It warned that the loss of officers to violent crime places additional strain on efforts to combat criminal activity and ensure public safety.

“Every police officer lost to violent crime weakens the Province’s capacity to combat criminality and protect communities. One police officer killed is one too many,” said Masuku. The committee also raised concerns about the continued proliferation of firearms in communities, saying illegal weapons remain a major contributor to violent crime and the loss of innocent lives.

“As a Province, decisive action must be taken to remove illegal firearms from our streets and ensure that those who possess and use them for criminal purposes face the full might of the law,” Masuku said. Law enforcement agencies have been commended for their swift response to the incident. Police are currently searching for three suspects believed to be responsible for the killings.

The committee has called on members of the public who may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward and cooperate with police. It emphasized that community participation remains critical in the fight against crime and in ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.

The committee extended its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased and reaffirmed its support for law enforcement officers who continue to place themselves in harm’s way while protecting communities across Gauteng.
