OR Tambo lounge named best in Africa as travel expectations shift globally

Johannesburg – South Africa’s aviation sector has received a major boost after the Bidvest Premier Lounge at O.R. Tambo International Airport was named the best airport lounge in the Middle East and Africa.

The recognition comes from the 2026 Priority Pass Excellence Awards, which are based on more than 700,000 member ratings and reviews from travellers across the world. The awards measure a range of factors including customer service, comfort, food and beverage quality, facilities and overall passenger satisfaction.

The announcement places South Africa firmly on the global travel map at a time when international travel is recovering and evolving. Industry insights show that travellers are no longer satisfied with basic convenience alone. Instead, there is a clear shift towards experience-driven travel, where comfort, atmosphere and a sense of place play a key role in shaping the journey.

Priority Pass said the latest results show that “today’s travellers are placing greater value on experiences that go beyond the functional.” The organisation noted that leading airport lounges are increasingly designed to reflect their local environment, offering regionally inspired food, culturally influenced design and spaces that promote both relaxation and productivity.

In this context, the Bidvest Premier Lounge in Johannesburg stood out for its consistent service delivery and ability to handle high passenger volumes without compromising quality. Located at one of Africa’s busiest travel hubs, the lounge caters to both business and leisure travellers.

It offers a wide range of services, including hot meals, local food options, Wi-Fi, charging stations and work-friendly spaces. With capacity to accommodate up to 350 passengers at a time, it has been recognised for balancing scale with comfort.

In a statement, the lounge said the award reflects its commitment to high standards. “Winning this Priority Pass Excellence Award is a very proud moment for our entire team. It reflects our commitment to delivering a world class guest experience,” it said.

The lounge added that its success is rooted in its service culture. “What sets us apart is our genuine hospitality and a strong passion for what we do. Thank you to our valued guests and our incredible team for making this award possible.”

Globally, the top honour for Lounge of the Year went to the Escape Lounge at Portland International Airport in the United States. The facility was recognised for blending modern design with strong local identity, using regional materials, artwork and locally inspired food and beverages to create a more immersive travel experience.

Tom Waldron, Chief Experiences Officer at the Escape Lounge in Portland, said the award highlights a broader shift in the industry. “Winning Global Lounge of the Year… reflects our commitment to creating spaces that feel more than just part of the airport journey – they’re vibrant, welcoming environments shaped by a true sense of place,” he said.

He added: “We’re focused on delivering a personalised experience that travellers genuinely look forward to.”

Other regional winners included Lounge Fukuoka in Japan, Vienna Lounge in Austria and Club Kingston in Jamaica. Together, these winners reflect a global trend where airport lounges are evolving into curated spaces that prioritise comfort, identity and customer experience.

In a statement, Chris Ross said: “With demand for premium travel experiences at an all-time high, travellers are increasingly looking to make every moment of their journey more meaningful and memorable.”

He added: “Travellers today expect versatility, quality, and genuine local experience, and our partners are delivering on all three.”

The recognition of the Johannesburg lounge also points to broader developments within South Africa’s travel infrastructure. As passenger numbers increase, airports and service providers are under pressure to improve efficiency while maintaining high service standards.

Industry analysts say the ability to deliver consistent quality at scale will become a key differentiator, particularly for major hubs like OR Tambo, which serves as a gateway to the continent.

The awards suggest that South Africa is keeping pace with global trends, positioning itself as a competitive player in the premium travel experience market.

As travel continues to rebound, the focus on experience is expected to intensify, with airports worldwide investing in spaces that offer more than just transit, but a meaningful part of the journey itself.
