Bafana Bafana’s departure to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico has been delayed due to visa-related issues affecting several members of the squad.
The South African men’s national team was scheduled to leave OR Tambo International Airport on a chartered flight early on Sunday morning ahead of the global football showpiece. However, the trip had to be postponed after some players reportedly had not yet received their visas.
According to SABC, the delay was caused by an alleged administrative mix-up that resulted in several players not being issued with the necessary travel documents in time for the team’s departure.
The setback comes just days before South Africa’s opening match of the tournament. Bafana Bafana are set to face hosts Mexico on June 11 in the opening fixture of the FIFA World Cup.
The team has been drawn in Group A, where they will compete against Mexico and other group-stage opponents as they look to make an impact on football’s biggest stage.
Despite the delay, there has been no indication that South Africa’s participation in the tournament will be affected. Efforts are reportedly underway to resolve the visa issues and ensure the squad can travel as soon as possible.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has not yet issued a detailed statement on the matter.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
