Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has called for KZN to be declared a disaster zone after heavy downpours cause massive havoc and deaths.
The Minister said on Tuesday that President Cyril Ramaphosahas been briefed on the situation, and a call could be made soon.
KZN Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka said the latest reports indicate more than 45 people – including a teacher and five pupils, lost their lives as a result of the disastrous floods.
Property, vehicles, and other infrastructure have been severely damaged by floods in Durban and other parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Hlomuka also revealed that Disaster Management teams are continuing to work around the clock to assist residents who have been trapped as a result of the inclement weather conditions which led to localised flooding of human settlements and roads across the province.
Meanwhile, Standard Bank reported that it closed 34 branches and support facilities, while Transnet, MTN and many other businesses have also reported disturbances to their operations.
