The City of Tshwane’s MMC for Human Settlement, Mpho Mehlape-Zimu has launched a Women Build Event in Ga-Rankuwa Ext 10 on Monday, 16 August 2021.

Mehlape-Zimu said the aim of the event is to support construction of homes for vulnerable female headed households and highlighting the pivotal role women play in society and their right to access decent and affordable housing.

In support of the initiative the City of Tshwane has partnered with their stakeholders Habitat for Humanity, Nissan SA, Nedbank to build three houses for female headed households.

“The houses will be constructed with the help of volunteers who are mostly women and will be tasked with daily activities to complete the houses,” said Mehlape-Zimu.

She says the crew leaders are unemployed community members who are trained by Habitat for Humanity and are given a stipend for their services.

“Each day the volunteers will get a health and safety briefing. The teams will help construct external and internal walls, mix cement, move blocks, smooth walls, and clear the site,”

Mehlape-Zimu said the crew leaders will be available throughout the week and he community and builder are encouraged to interact with them.
