Ekurhuleni honors Banyana Banyana player who was murdered on freedom day.

The community of kwa-Thema came out in numbers to take part in the Eudy Simelane Pilgrimage walk in memory of the late Banyana Banyana player.

The 31 year old Banyana Banyana player who was a member of the LGBTQI was brutally murdered in a homophobic attack on the 27, April 2008. Her body was dumped in a field in Kwa-Thema, where she had been Gang raped and left to die from multiple stab wounds.

During the March celebration, the Gauteng Governments focused on the rights of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) community

Gauteng Premier David Makhura who led the Provincial Freedom Day celebration in the City of Ekurhuleni was joined by Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina and Gauteng Department of sports, arts, culture and recreation MEC Faith Mazibuko also attended. Amongst those attended was former Banyana Banyana players Fikile Sithole, Gloria Hlalela. Sibongile Khumalo and also Former Coach Joseph Mkhonza.

The MEC of sports said ‘ As we celebrate more than two decades of our Freedom and Democracy, South Africans and the people of Gauteng will look back with pride and hope for more.’

‘We will also look back and remember our fallen LGBTQI activist, Eudy Simelane, who was brutally murdered on freedom day.’
