Dr Murunwa Makwarela, the former Mayor of Tshwane, was granted bail after appearing in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, 3 April. The 50-year-old accused is facing charges of fraud and uttering.
Colonel Katlego Mogale of the Hawks, told Gauteng Newspaper that Makwarela is scheduled to appear in the same court on 2 May for disclosure and instructions.
The accused was previously sequestered and claimed to have been rehabilitated shortly after being elected Executive Mayor of Tshwane. Mogale said was then requested by the city to provide proof of the rehabilitation.
“The proof was provided on his behalf by his actuary which upon further internal investigation by the city was found to be fraudulent hence the opening of a formal case. The case was referred to the Gauteng Serious Corruption Investigation for further exploration,” she said.
Mogale said the team found that the rehabilitation certificate was disputed by the Pretoria High Court as having been issued by them. “The accused was charged with two counts of fraud and uttering resulting in his arrest this morning,” she said.
