Gauteng Health releases 76 students from quarantine

The Gauteng Department of Health has announced that 76 students were released over the weekend from quarantine after they tested negative from Coronavirus. On arrival in South Africa they were placed in quarantine at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg following their return from China last month.

About 76 students reunited with their families after being released from 14 days of mandatory isolation. It was said that these students have been in work placement at Chinese companies arranged through various Sector Education and Training Authorities.

All 80 students have tested negative for the Coronavirus and were allowed to go home. However, four of them remained behind for further observation, because they had pre-existing medical conditions. The remaining students are set to go home on Tuesday.

The students were sent off by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande and officials from department of health on Saturday at the hotel.

Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku has thanked the Gauteng Health team and Birchwood hotel for taking care of the students.

“We want to thank both the Gauteng Health team and Birchwood for caring for the students until now” said MEC Masuku.
