The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) will on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, officially conclude the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign with a province-wide Children’s Walk aimed at raising awareness about child abuse and teenage pregnancy.
Hosted along Main Reef Road to Kagiso Police Station, the walk seeks to amplify the voices of young people and bring communities together in a united call to protect and uphold the rights of children.
According to the advisory, children from across Gauteng, child rights organisations, government partners, and community structures will participate—strengthening collective responsibility in combating abuse and supporting vulnerable children.
Key Issues the Walk Will Highlight
The event draws attention to several urgent challenges affecting Gauteng’s young people:
- A sharp increase in child abuse cases, including neglect, exploitation, and sexual abuse
- Teenage pregnancy, which disrupts schooling, increases vulnerability, and perpetuates long-term cycles of poverty
- The need for stronger community responsibility in safeguarding and protecting children
- Support and interventions provided by GDSD, such as psychosocial services, prevention programmes, family strengthening, and child protection measures
Voices from the Ground
The closing ceremony will include messages from children, caregivers, government leaders, and frontline practitioners who work daily with vulnerable groups. These voices are expected to highlight both the realities facing young people and the ongoing efforts to create safer communities.
