Gautrain annual fares will not be increased next month. The announcement was made by the Gautrain Management Agency and the Bombela Concession Company.
This transpired after the Gautrain resumed a reduced service on 4 May after the system was closed during level five of the lockdown.
Gautrain spokesperson Barbara Jensen Vorster told Gauteng Newspaper that the decision to delay the increase was due to the ongoing Coronavirus lockdown regulations and the current economic situation in South Africa.
“Gautrain department decided not to increase its annual fare increase because of Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis that’s why we cannot increase at this point and this time,” said Vorster.
In accordance with the Gautrain Concession Agreement, Gautrain fares are adjusted annually in the month of June. The annual fare increase is guided by the Consumer Price Index.
The Gautrain Management Agency and the Bombela Concession Company have instead decided to delay this increase to later in the year once it has more accurate information of when the lockdown regulations will be lifted.
