Impact-campaign under-way to educate local communities about albinism

Ahead of its formal festival premiere scheduled for 2021, I, Marry Documentary will be screened in local communities in a nation-wide impact campaign.  This campaign will begin with its first screening in Hillbrow Theatre next week on Wednesday.

The campaign aims to create awareness around the dangerous myths of keeping the lives of Albinism people in danger.

The screening is made possible with support from Heinrich Boell, Cape Town and CGTN. I, Marry is a South African director, Aliki Saragas-Georgiou’s second feature film. This follows her multi-award-winning feature documentary Strike A Rock, which traced the untold story of the women of Marikana after the infamous 2012 Marikana Massacre.

Screenings will be free and open to the public with strict COVID-19 protocols observed. The Impact producer of the screening, Jacqui-Lee Katz told Gauteng News that the campaign will aid in increased support for people with Albinism across Africa.

“It also aims to build momentum for the movement, aiming for a cross-continental reach. In addition to having to deal with the dangerous myths surrounding people with Albinism that has kept her life in constant danger,” she said.

The screening will be focused on rural communities who do not typically have access to impact cinema and where subjugation of people with Albinism is rife.

Straddling the balance of light and darkness, Reginamary Ndlovu’s story is one about the pain that lurks beneath the surface.

She’s a survivor of a lifetime of sexual abuse. This fiercely determined woman with Albinism from Zambia and South Africa, fights every day to overcome her past and create a present that she is proud of.

Reginamary, local NPOs, independent organisations and local leadership will be involved in facilitated discussions. This table round discussion with the community will follows the screening. This will be done in order to involve every level of society in creating a safe space for learning and education.
