There are large quantities of waste being illegally dumped in Bellevue and Bellevue East, Yeoville Johannesburg, as Pikitup is unable to render their services.
Environment and Infrastructure MMC Nico de Jager said this happens because there are ongoing violent protests in Yeoville.
“Recently Pikitup driver was forced by Yeoville residents to empty a truck full of waste. He resisted but was violently threatened. Pikitup employees tried to service the area but have been forced out with violence. There has been no collection of waste, street cleaning and clearing of illegal dumping in these areas”, he said.
Jager said Pikitup management instructed service delivery to temporarily stop until the area becomes safe.
“Interim Pikitup’s Norwood Depot together with Johannesburg Metro Police Department wants to ensure that operations in the area resume. Contingency measures are in place to tackle waste backlogs which resulted in ongoing violence”, said Jager.
He added that contingency plan has instituting double shifts, one in the morning and another one in the afternoon.
“The plan uses extra resources from Monday to Friday therefore to handle the waste backlogs. The plan will be implemented once peace and stability has returned to the affected areas. Pikitup apologies to the residents of the inconvenience and urges residents to dispose the waste at 5th Street Garden site in Bezuidenhout Valley”, said Jager.
