The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has secured a successful conviction of the former JMPD member, Constable Donald Nyiko Mpangela on Monday morning. IPID Spokeswoman Ndileka Cola stated that Mpangela has been found guilty for attempted murder.
“Nyiko has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment wholly suspended for five years for attempted murder, 24 months of which will be under correctional supervision. The former law enforcement officer was found guilty of attempted murder by Orlando Magistrate Court earlier this year,” She said.
It is alleged that Mpangela shot at the fleeing taxi next to Bara taxi rank, Johannesburg on 2015. Cola said the incident occurred when JMPD officials were conducting an operation next to Bara taxi rank, checking the road worthy status of the taxis.
“A certain taxi approached the police, the driver did not stop when stopped by the police officers, instead it sped off. The JMPD official Donald Mpangela shot at the fleeing taxi. Unfortunately, an African woman who was seated at the back seat was shot on her back and taken to hospital for treatment,” Cola said.
IPID thoroughly investigated this matter gathering all necessary information and evidence that has finally led to the conviction of the officer.
“The Directorate remains committed to its oversight role over the law enforcement agencies without fear or favor in this country, to ensure justice for victims of alleged police misconduct,” Cola said.
