Leeukop Correctional Services launched 16 days of activism recently under the theme of acting against violence imposed on women and children in South Africa.
Inmates were participating in positive programs including choir and conducting an open discussion with the public that was invited at the correctional service. Victims of rape and abuse expressed themselves as they explained how they were abused by men whom they trusted and expected to protect them. Alleged offenders expressed their guilt and asked for forgiveness to all the women and children who have been abused.
“We are here today to heal together as a community and we’re having an open dialogue with offenders. We hopewe will be able to move on as a society and rehabilitate our men, we hope this will be the beginning of rehabilitating our men and healing as a nation,” said Pinky Mavuso.
Offenders explained how society and the community isolates them and how they would like to challenge community members to allow them to show their remorse. 16 days of activism against women and children kicked off from 25 November to 10 December and stronger steps are taken against perpetrators of violence.
