LIMPOPO POLICE BUST OVERLOADED BUS CARRYING 45 UNDOCUMENTED MALAWIAN NATIONALS

By Julia Moyo

Limpopo police have intercepted an overloaded passenger bus transporting 45 undocumented Malawian nationals during a routine enforcement operation targeting illegal immigration and road safety compliance across key provincial routes.

According to a statement attributed to the Limpopo SAPS Provincial Spokesperson, officers stopped the bus at a routine checkpoint along a major route after it was flagged for suspected overloading and unsafe travel conditions. Police say the vehicle appeared to be carrying more passengers than legally permitted, prompting further inspection.

During the stop, officers conducted identity and immigration checks on all occupants. It was established that 45 passengers were unable to produce valid documentation authorising their stay in South Africa. Preliminary identification confirmed them to be Malawian nationals.

The driver of the bus was immediately arrested and is expected to face charges relating to the transportation of undocumented foreign nationals, contravention of the Immigration Act, and possible road traffic violations. Authorities have indicated that additional charges may be considered depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations.

The matter has since been referred to the Department of Home Affairs, which will verify the immigration status of the detained individuals and determine the next legal steps, which may include deportation proceedings where applicable.

Limpopo Traffic Police have raised ongoing concerns about the use of passenger transport vehicles in cross-border smuggling operations, warning that overloading not only violates transport regulations but also poses serious safety risks to passengers.

Law enforcement agencies have confirmed that intensified operations will continue across major routes in Limpopo as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal immigration and enforce road safety compliance.
