Gauteng Premier David Makhura has warned against political interference in distribution of food parcels. Makhura made the plea during his visit to a food bank on Tuesday at the Ekurhuleni Fresh Food Market, in Springs. He was accompanied by acting MEC of Social Development Panyaza Lesufi.
“The system must be about reaching the 20 per cent of Gauteng residents who are food insecure. This number is being increased to ensure the indigent are provided with essentials beyond the lockdown. There should be no patronage networks and no political interference in all processes.” said Makhura.
Gauteng has the highest number of Covid-19 positive cases in South Africa. The visit was to ensure that there are enough supplies available for the needy as they battle COVID-19.
“Today we visited food banks across the province to ensure a fair process of food distribution. Food security forms part of our three-pillar strategy in the fight against the spread of Covid-19,” said Makhura.
Since the beginning of the lockdown the provincial government has worked with social partners to provide about 15 000 food parcels to disadvantaged communities.

He appealed to donors to continue to land a helping hand so that the disadvantage cannot go to bed with empty stomachs.
“NGOs, business community, civil society and all those who continue to lend a helping hand in the form of donations to contact the Gauteng Provincial Government on hotline@gauteng.gov.za” said Makhura.
Those in need of food aid within the Gauteng province can call the toll free number 0860 011 000 or email to support@gauteng.gov.za to access social security relief programmes.
The food parcels are also available for citizens who earn a combined household income of R3,600, as well as to recipients of Sassa grants.
