1 879 insourced cleaners commenced their work on 1 September 2019

City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba confirmed that the City welcomed 1 879 insourced cleaners who started their work on the 1st September 2019.

Mashaba said they will gain a lot from employee benefits such as pension, medical aid and increased take home salary.

“On 17 August 2019, we welcomed the first 450 beneficiaries of this insourcing programme. Due to their sheer number, the remaining 1 429 cleaners were registered the following day as well as last weekend of the month. Many of the beneficiaries spoke of their experience of exploitation years and neglect. Due to the hard work and dedication of this multi-party government, they were able to share their relief and gratitude for the change that finally came”, he said.

Mashaba said these cleaners previously earned a mere R3, 000 per month while the City paid around R6, 500 per cleaner. He added that it was paid to the outsourced companies they worked for.

“The cleaners will now be able to take over R4, 000  home every month, after deduction of salary amounting to R5, 600 per month. The insourcing initiative will also ensure stability and predictable payment of salaries to these employees. They will taste a standard practice which was allegedly sorely missing under their previous employer. Upon registration of the first beneficiary group, there can be no doubt that there is something wrong, cruel and insensitive about forcing people to work under uncertain conditions. The insourcing of our cleaners is timely step meant to keep away the ravages of politically-induced exploitative tenderpreneurship, as well as under-employment and unemployment”, he said.

Mashaba added that the insourcing of cleaners follows the successful insourcing of security guards. He said it has brought dignity on close to 4, 000 families.

“The insourcing programme has ensured that our security staff and cleaning staff are treated fairly and with respect they deserve”, said Mashaba.
