17 people have been killed after eight unidentified gunmen opened fire at a tavern in Extension 3, Wedela, located in Gauteng’s West Rand District.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) the deadly attack occurred on Saturday night at approximately 21:30.
Gauteng SAPS Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said patrons were socialising inside and outside the tavern when the attackers arrived.
“It is alleged that gunmen immediately opened fire on the crowd outside before forcing their way indoors to continue shooting at people inside.”
Sibeko said the suspects, who were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and handguns, robbed several patrons of their cellphones before escaping in two getaway cars. They also set two vehicles on fire at the scene before fleeing.
17 victims, including 13 men and four women were declared dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services. Another 15 people suffered gunshot wounds and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Gauteng police have launched a massive manhunt to locate and arrest the eight suspects. Sibeko said specialised detective units have been deployed to lead the search, though authorities have not yet established a motive for the violent massacre.
“Police have opened 17 counts of murder, 15 counts of attempted murder and two counts of malicious damage to property,” said Sibeko, confirming that no arrests have been made so far.
Law enforcement officials are appealing to the public for help in identifying the attackers. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or send an anonymous tip through the MySAPS app.
