Confessions of a gambler

If you’ve ever heard of a book that compels a reader to continue reading it even when they can no longer do so, then this is the one. Author Rayda Jacobs did a sterling job of retelling her experiences of how she became addicted to gambling.

Her fictional character Abeeda is a muslim woman, living in the Cape flats, who is frequently visited by her twogrown sons and neighbours. One of them happens to be gay and by the time he discloses his HIV status he is on his death bed.

Abeeda then frequents the local casino in a bid to fill the void in her heart.

This is a good read especially since it captures another side of the Cape flats that isn’t typical of the violence and gangs we’re so accustomed to.
