During the festive season a video of a woman giving birth in a minibus taxi went viral but has resurfaced recently. In the video the woman’s boyfriend, Themba Maseko, is heard shouting and complaining about Chiawelo Clinic nurses who refused to help his girlfriend.
It is alleged that the patient was received by the security guards, at the labour ward, who then informed the nurses at the hospital. It is reported that the nurses went to the car and noticed that the placenta was still inside the mother’s womb. This then prompted them to return to the clinic and collect medical instruments to assist the patient.
Maseko, however, reported to the MEC of Health, Bandile Masuku, and the media that when they arrived at Chiawelo clinic the nurses refused to assist them because the mother of his child had given birth in a minibus. The family called the manager and they were told to lodge a complaint against the nurses and an investigation would be conducted.
Recently the Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union(YNITU) issued a restraining order against the father as he is reported to be constantly roaming the clinic premises looking for the nurses who refused to assist his girlfriend and child.
Themba was violating the privacy of other mothers in the labour ward. According to the union the decision to issue a restraining order was made after an incident on December 12 when Maseko came with eight men demanding answers from the nurses.
