Johannesburg – The Gauteng Provincial Government says it has made measurable progress in improving safety across the province, achieving 84% of its targets for the 2024/25 financial year despite budget constraints.
According to the Department of Community Safety, reported crime declined by 4.5% in the first quarter of 2024/25, while road fatalities dropped by 21.84% in the final quarter following intensified law-enforcement and festive-season operations.
The province strengthened police oversight through unannounced station visits, expanded CCTV coverage, and improved response times using technology such as the e-Panic Button and interim Provincial Integrated Command Centre. More than 877 crime-prevention operations and 568 school safety interventions were conducted across Gauteng.
Efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence and Femicide saw over 16,000 victims supported, with additional Victim-Friendly Rooms and Green Doors rolled out at police stations to improve survivor care.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi said while challenges remain, progress is visible and called on communities, law enforcement and government to continue working together to build safer communities across Gauteng.
