Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens Declared Peace Officers

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has welcomed the decision to formally declare Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens as Peace Officers, a move expected to strengthen crime prevention across the province.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, in terms of Section 334 of the Criminal Procedure Act of 1977. It legalises the status, powers and responsibilities of the wardens, providing long-awaited clarity on their role within Gauteng’s law-enforcement framework.

The Committee said the decision brings closure to legal and operational uncertainties that have surrounded the wardens since their establishment, including concerns previously raised by the Public Protector regarding their appointment and deployment.

Noting a steady decline in crime statistics in the province, the Committee expressed optimism that the formalisation of the wardens’ status will contribute to sustained crime reduction and improved public safety.

The Legislature also commended the Gauteng Provincial Government for continued investment in crime-fighting initiatives, including additional SAPS vehicles, helicopters, drones, panic buttons and the rollout of CCTV infrastructure across the province.
