SANDF and Police Launch Joint Operation in Mitchells Plain
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has teamed up with police to crack down on gang activity in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. The joint operation, which began on Monday, has resulted in the arrest of two men found in possession of heroin.
Troops have been deployed to high-risk areas, including Mitchells Plain, Makhaza, and Philippi, to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in combating gang-related crime. The operation involves roadblocks, cordon and search operations, and intelligence-driven raids on suspected gang hideouts.
The deployment is part of a larger initiative announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa, aimed at addressing gang violence and illicit mining in five provinces, including the Western Cape. While the operation is expected to provide temporary relief, officials caution that long-term solutions are needed to address the root causes of crime.
The SANDF’s involvement is seen as a boost to police efforts, but some are calling for more sustainable solutions to tackle poverty, unemployment, and inequality driving gang activity
