ANC marks Freedom Charter anniversary with call for South Africans to vote

By Roland Mpofu

The African National Congress (ANC) has commemorated the 71st anniversary of the Freedom Charter, using the occasion to urge South Africans, particularly young people and first-time voters, to register and participate in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
In a statement marking the anniversary, the party described the Freedom Charter as the cornerstone of South Africa’s democratic journey, saying its vision continues to guide the country’s pursuit of equality, justice and human dignity.

Adopted on 26 June 1955 at the Congress of the People in Kliptown, the Freedom Charter laid out a vision for a democratic South Africa based on the principle that “The People Shall Govern.” It later became one of the key foundations of the country’s democratic Constitution.
The ANC said this year’s commemoration coincides with several significant milestones in South Africa’s history, including the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, 32 years of democracy, 30 years of the Constitution and the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March. The party said these anniversaries serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the struggle for freedom and the ongoing responsibility to address poverty, inequality and unemployment.

While acknowledging progress made since the advent of democracy, including improved access to housing, education, healthcare, water, electricity and social protection, the ANC said much work remains to build an inclusive economy and improve the lives of South Africans.
The governing party reiterated its commitment to what it has declared as the “Year of Decisive Action to Fix Local Government and Transform the Economy”, saying it remains focused on building capable municipalities, creating jobs and improving service delivery. The ANC also encouraged eligible voters to verify their registration details, make use of online voter registration and participate in the Electoral Commission’s voter registration weekend scheduled for 1 and 2 August.

“The People Shall Govern remains a living call to action,” the party said in a statement, urging citizens to honour the legacy of the Freedom Charter by exercising their democratic right to vote.
The Freedom Charter was adopted by thousands of delegates representing the Congress Alliance in Kliptown on 26 June 1955 and remains one of the defining documents in South Africa’s struggle for democracy.
