Veteran South African actress and beauty queen Cynthia Shange has died at the age of 76, according to a family announcement released on Monday, 20 April 2026.The family said Shange passed away in the early hours of Monday in a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal following illness.
Shange rose to prominence in the 1970s when she was crowned Miss Africa South. She made history by representing South Africa at Miss World 1972 in London, where she placed 5th, excelling during the era of segregated pageantry.Her screen career spanned decades. She was widely celebrated for her role in the isiZulu TV drama Udeliwe, and portrayed “Mkabi” in the five-part mini-series Shaka Zulu. In later years she joined the cast of SABC2’s Muvhango, earning her status as an elder stateswoman of South African television. She also featured in several programmes throughout the 1990s.
Her contributions to the arts were recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the South African Film and TV Awards (Saftas) and the Simon Mabhunu Sabela TV and Film Awards.Shange is survived by her daughters Sihle and Nonhle, sons Ayanda and Benele Thema, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Funeral and memorial details have not yet been announced by the family.
