Racist Catzavelos faces prosecution in Greece

Racist Adam Catzavelos appeared at the Randburg Magistrate Court on Thursday morning on one count of crimen injuria and the matter was postponed to the 10th of July.

Catzavelos defence indicated to the court that they would like to make representatives to the office of the director of public prosecutions.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Louw Mjondondwane said that this will require the director of public prosecution to review the earlier decision that was taken by the senior public prosecutor of the Randburg Magistrate Court.

Mjondondwane continue to say that she was hoping that an outcome would be ready on the 10th of July and the NPA would communicate the decision through the court.

EFF’s Gauteng Provincial chairperson Mandisa Masego said she was certified that the NPA were pulling their weight and they were in communication with the Humans Right Commission because they had started initiating their own proceeding which were based on their own complaint.

“The defence tried to get a much further date and we cannot have that kind of delay because Adam has already defied the South African justice system by running away the entire time and the delays will count against him.” Said Mashego

Mashego went on to say that they suspect that the defence will argue due restriction issues and they would bring their legal team to join the NPA to deal with any technicalities and unnecessary blockages.

“For us the interest of this matter is to go to trial as soon as possible.”

Mashego said this case does not belong to her or the EFF but the African people and their dignity.

She added that if Cartzavelos offered an apology through the media that is his right and if he wanted to engage with them he would have to do it through their lawyers and the NPA.

“When his lawyers wanted to speak to me, I was advised not to speak to them at this stage unless they are requesting a formal meeting”

She continued to say that Catzavelos apology is not justice and he could apologise and still serve jail time.

“Everyone can do as they wish and just apologise”.

Mashego condemned people who think that South Africans are crybabies, sensitive and do not want to get over apartheid.

“We cannot get over it and we will not get over it especially because of the result of apartheid, racism, black poverty and black subrogation to economic equality” explained Masego

The EFF’ Gauteng provincial chairperson welcomed the SAPS confirmation that Catzavelos also faces charges of crimen injuria in Greece, where he made the racist remarks.
