SANDF DEPLOYMENT AIMS TO TACKLE GANG VIOLENCE AND ILLEGAL MINING IN GAUTENG

SANDF in full uniform ready to tackle gang violence

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has deployed over 2,200 soldiers to Gauteng and other provinces to tackle gang violence and illegal mining. This move, announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa, aims to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in combating organised crime and restoring stability in affected areas.

The SANDF will focus on specific areas, including Riverlea and Westbury in Gauteng, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape, operating under police command with clear rules of engagement. The deployment is expected to last for a year, with an estimated cost of R823 million. Residents in affected areas have welcomed the move, saying the increased security presence offers hope in communities long plagued by violent crime and gang activity. However, some experts express skepticism about the effectiveness of the deployment, citing concerns about the SANDF’s policing skills and the need for institutional reform.

The deployment of the SANDF aims to support SAPS in preventing and combating crime, help restore order in communities affected by gang violence and illegal mining and target organised crime syndicates and disrupt their operations. Local residents in Westbury expressed their delight in the deployment if the National Defence force, stating that this deployment could be effective in lowering the crime rates in the community

The deployment is part of a broader strategy to address organised crime, including intelligence consolidation, multidisciplinary task teams, and reforms within the criminal justice system. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has welcomed the deployment, stating it’s a critical and long-overdue intervention to address the devastating impact of illegal mining in Gauteng. As the situation unfolds, communities are watching closely, hoping for a reduction in crime and improved safety.
