Department of Economic Development MMC Leah Knott awarded 97 artisans certificates after completing a 12-week short skills artisan-training programme.
MMC Knott said graduates were equipped with different skills including carpentry, roof laying, plumbing, plasting and other skills related to the renewal energy sector.
“Artisan programme is integral in achieving the City’s five percent economic growth target by 2021 and reduction of unemployment. I encourage young people to remain in the field, as there is a great demand for artisans. Through this programme, there will be many opportunities opening up for you once you have completed apprenticeship. South Africa has a great number of artisans shortage particularly in Johannesburg on construction and engineering sectors”, she said.
Knott added that the skills acquired through this programme would give young people an advantage of access to different business and employment opportunities.
“University of Johannesburg was in partnership to make this skills training programme to be a success. It applied to courses abide by the requirements of their respective fields. Graduates received NQF Level 3 equivalent and N2 Certificate. Credits obtained can also be utilized in achieving further qualifications. The intention of City is to continue with the programme to full apprenticeship, which can take up to three years. The aim is to restore hope amongst youth who are left out of economy and desperation of opportunities”, said Knott.
One of the graduates from Alexandra Martha Segobela said she feels overwhelmed after reviving her hope of life. Segobela thanked the City as she got an opportunity and said she wants to see herself working for big construction companies.
“However, I want to start my own construction company and the dream is about to become a reality. I received a National Certificate in Building and Civil Construction”, said Segobela.
Another artisan graduate from Betrams Brenda Magwete said City improved her prospects of securing empowerment.
“I am ready for opportunities as they will change my life. I also received National Certificate in Building and Civil Construction”, said Magwete.
MMC Knott said they have been working hard to transform Johannesburg from a place of despair to one characterised by optimism and hope. She said they believe that when Johannesburg works, South Africa works.
