Basic education gearing to open Early Childhood Development Centres

The Department of Basic Education says it will maintain a delicate balance between allowing Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDCs) to operate. Minister Angie Motshekga said that her department together with the Department of Social Development is still preparing to provide conducive environment for ECDs.

“We are working together with the Department of Social Development on this matter as it straddles both departments at the moment. Due and careful consideration will be made to ensure that we maintain the delicate balance between allowing ECDs to operate,” said Motshekga.

According to Motshekga the opening of ECDCs will be alongside with the safety and health of the children and their caregivers.

“The regulations for Level 3 are being finalised and we believe there will be a solution to this matter very soon,” said Motshekga.

With the further easing of lockdown restrictions, several people in addition to those providing essential services returned to work opening a gap for the childcare of these workers.

“We understand that Early Childhood Development centres also provide the necessary caring and feeding services for children from families,” said Motshekga.
