EFF’s Nkululeko Dunga being officially sworn as MEC of Finance for Gauteng
Nkululeko Dunga, the Gauteng chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was sworn in as the new Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance in Gauteng on April 2, 2026. This move marks a significant shift in the province’s political landscape, with the EFF now holding a crucial portfolio in the ANC-led Government of Provincial Unity.
Dunga’s appointment has sparked debate, with some questioning the motivations behind the move and his qualifications for the role. The DA’s Solly Msimanga criticized the decision, calling it a “desperate move” by Premier Panyaza Lesufi to maintain his position.
Responding to criticisms, Premier Lesufi asked, “When the Minister of Public Works was chosen, when the Minister of Agriculture was chosen, did people ask for their qualifications?” He emphasized that Dunga’s appointment should not be reduced to questions of qualification saying, “Let’s not look at the person, let’s not look at the qualifications or skin colour.
Dunga, who previously served as Ekurhuleni’s Finance MMC, has expressed readiness to take office. “We are prepared to be led and guided by the collective, and are committed to ensuring stability in government, both politically and administratively,” he stated. EFF leader Julius Malema has also expressed confidence in Dunga, urging him to “deliver a clean audit” and prioritize financial stability for Gauteng.
