Educators at Sikhulisile Primary School in Ekalanga near Tshwane discovered yesterday that criminals broke into their premises and stole personal protective equipment (PPE). The Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona has confirmed that robbers went away with PPEs which were meant for educators and learners on Monday.
The equipment had been delivered to the school in preparation of the return of teachers and staff, as the academic year is set to resume on 1 June. This was the latest incident in the spate of break-ins that has plagued schools since the beginning of national lockdown.
“It’s quite sad to experience such incidents in our schools. We have been actually experiencing so many of this vandalism and its really uncalled for,” said Mabona.
Mabona said that stealing of school’s equipment will disrupt the reopening of schools.
This is unfortunate as we are preparing our schools as per the schedule; this will derail us in doing so.” Said Mabona.
He urged members of the community to come forward with information that could lead to the whereabouts of the PPE.
“We call upon members of the community who might have witnessed this or who will have information on the whereabouts of our PPEs where they would have been identified and to alert the police,” said Mabona.
