Department of Public Safety MMC Michael Sun visited assembly plant in Olifantsfontein, which is one of five assembly plants where 40 new fire engines will be build.
Sun said on the 23 July 2019, that the City placed an initial order with the supplier for the fire engines and other fire emergency vehicles, to the tune of R216 million rand. He added that this phase is one of the City’s new fire engine replacement program.
“Range of fire vehicles include 1 vehicle with telescopic ladder, 15 Grass Firefighting Vehicle (Skid unit), 2 major Pumpers and 7 light rapid rescue vehicle. 2 level 2 command vehicle, 2 industrial pumpers, 5 heavy duty rear mounted pumpers, 4 water tankers and 1 heavy duty hazmat vehicle”, he said.
Sun said after the procurement process was completed and purchase order placed, he inspected the assembly plant in order to ensure that the service provider is on track.
“It should be on track with its production schedule and the City will receive new fire engines within three months delivery time. The procurement of these fire stations are of importance as our residents’ lives and properties depend on the efficient service of our Emergency Management Services. I will do regular oversight to ensure that production is on track for speedy and efficient delivery”, said Sun.
He added that service provider’s five plants situated across the country are designed to work on the City’s order. Sun said the City’s team will be visiting these plants in order to conduct oversight inspections.
“The project is more than just the assembly of fire engines. The building is of vital equipment that saves residents’ lives and properties. To honour those that gave ultimate sacrifice for the safety of others. The vehicles will be named after fallen firefighters with their name inscribed onto the new engine”, he added.
Sun said the important that they always remember those that have given their lives for the protection of others.
“This applies mostly on when we are finally able to replace the fleet of aged fire engines in Johannesburg”, added Sun.
