City of Tshwane plant trees in celebration of Arbor month

The City of Tshwane has kicked off its National Arbor Month celebrations by planting spekboom trees in Refilwe, Bronkhorspruit, Winterveld and Mabopane.

Tshwane’s MMC for Environment and Agricultural Management, Aldernan Wannenburg said while the National Arbor Week falls during the first week of September, the city has decided to extend this period for the duration of September.

“It is our intention to distribute and plant thousands of trees at schools and other public facilities across all the regions of Tshwane,” said Wannenburg.

Wannenburg said the city will plant two tree species, one common and one rare.

“The Arbor Month celebrations will also be used to promote a better understanding of trees, particularly indigenous trees,” he said.

Wannenburg said the city officials will highlight the important role trees play in the livelihoods of ordinary people and their environment.

“This year the focus will be on encouraging communities to participate in various greening activities within their neighbourhoods and promote the planting of trees,” he added.
