COVID-19 beats the City of Joburg’s Executive Mayor

The acting Executive Mayor and the MMC for Health and Social Development, Councillor Eunice Mgcina confirmed that the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Geoffrey Makhubo has sadly passed on. 

She says Councillor Makhubo was defeated by Covid-19 before he could beat the virus. It happed this morning July 9, 2021, after being in hospital for a while. “We had hoped that the Executive Mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be,” Mgcina said.

While the family is facing the darkest cloud, they have requested to be given their privacy and space to process the whole thing of the passing of their family member. For those who want to mourn for the Executive Mayor they are discouraged from Gathering at the Makhubo’s home.

Mgcina said that the office of the Executive Mayor and Speaker of Council will announce further details when the time goes by.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades,” Mgcina added.
