The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, has gone missing in Mozambique after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by severe floodwaters.
According to preliminary information, Mngwevu was travelling through an area affected by heavy rainfall when the incident occurred. Torrential rains have caused widespread flooding in parts of Mozambique in recent days, damaging infrastructure and making roads extremely dangerous.
Ekurhuleni municipal officials said emergency services and local authorities in Mozambique are continuing search and rescue operations. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, and no further details have been released regarding other occupants of the vehicle.
The City of Ekurhuleni expressed deep concern and said it is working closely with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and Mozambican authorities to assist in the ongoing efforts.
“We remain hopeful and are keeping MMC Mngwevu and his family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the municipality said in a brief statement.
Residents and colleagues have taken to social media to express shock and support, describing Mngwevu as a dedicated public servant committed to improving road infrastructure and transport services in Ekurhuleni.
