Father’s Day is not just a day for dads to get more appreciation gifts. It is celebration that honors fathers and all the father figures in the world every third Sunday of June. The day dates back to 1910 when it gained prominence.
Although the origin is hard to be traced, most people will agree that Sonora Dodd who initiated this celebration played a big role in making father’s day what it is today.
Sonora Louise Smart Dodd first brought up the idea of a father’s day in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. When Sonora’s mother died in childbirth with her sixth child, William was left to raise the newborn and five other children by his own. As an adult, Sonora realized how strong and unselfish her father was, raising his kids as a single parent in that time it was taboo.
Sonora wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday in June, because it was close to her dad’s birthday.
Now everyone around the world is celebrating this beautiful day, making their dads, step dads and granddads feel special.
This year, father’s day will be celebrated on youth day, a day where South Africans will go out in numbers dressed in different school uniforms to attend various events.
