Gauteng Department of Health MEC Bandile Masuku received unqualified audit report for the last 2018/19 financial year.
Auditor General concluded that according to Modified Cash System principle, the annual financial statements gave department’s operations and its financial position fair results. However, key recommendations of the Auditor General will be implemented in order to better governance and improved outcomes in 2019/20.
Masuku said the 2018/19 financial year was difficult for the department.
“Burning of Lisbon led to loss of some documents; the subsequent relocation of staff affected morale and presented other challenges. However, the results show resilience of the department’s employees to do better and improve against all odds. While adhering to Public Finance Management Act, the department’s milestone was attributed to a number of interventions including improvement in internal controls that had to be put in place”, said Masuku.
Masuku said the audit was most gruelling as the department served as pilot for implementation of the amended Audit Profession Act. He added that the department is amongst two health departments in the country to get unqualified audit options on their Annual Financial Statements, as it was not small feat. “We aim to improve and elevate ourselves to clean audit outcome. Achieving audit outcome would not be possible without our officials who work day and night to improve governance in the department. We extend our gratitude to all employees of the department and thank them for their commitment, as well as hard work”, said Masuku.
