The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has launched an upgraded online booking system on its MyHomeAffairs Online platform to stop criminal syndicates from hoarding and selling appointment slots to citizens.
The intervention introduces enhanced security measures designed to prevent the abuse of booking slots and ensure that appointments remain available to legitimate clients.
Carli van Wyk, spokesperson for the department, said that under the new system, users are required to create a profile linked directly to their South African ID number and email address before they can secure a booking. She said the upgrade follows years of systematic abuse of the previous booking platform.
“The upgrade follows years of abuse of the previous booking platform by syndicates and other unscrupulous individuals who exploited vulnerabilities in the system to block appointment slots and sell them to desperate citizens,” said van Wyk.
As a result, many ordinary South Africans struggled to secure appointments for essential Home Affairs services. Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber said ordinary citizens have long been disadvantaged by criminals exploiting weaknesses in the system for profit.
“The migration of our booking system to MyHomeAffairs Online directly addresses this abuse by linking bookings to verified user profiles, strengthening the integrity of the system and protecting citizens’ access to services,” Schreiber said. The DHA noted that the upgrade is a critical milestone in its digital transformation journey, which aims to improve service delivery, combat fraud and restore dignity to the public.
For locals, the change removes a significant financial and logistical barrier, ensuring that citizens are no longer financially exploited to obtain important national identity documents.
Schreiber added that the reform advances the department’s broader vision of “Home Affairs @ Home” by making essential services more secure and convenient for all citizens.
The upgraded system is currently live and can be accessed at myhomeaffairsonline.dha.gov.za.
