The police in Gauteng together with other law enforcement agencies were at it again this weekend, firmly asserting the authority of the State in the Province.
The officials under the leadership of Gauteng SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela were out in numbers in support of Operation O Kae Molao which seeks to address any form of criminal activities.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello said the operation also aims to assist the local station to reduce crime and this weekend the focus was on illegal mining which is a root cause for crimes such as assault, murders, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms.
“The operation saw over 800 people arrested for various crimes that range from possession of unlicensed firearms, possession and dealing in drugs,” said Sello.
“ Among the arrested there was also wanted suspects for GBVF related crimes as well as 70 people for contravening the Immigration Act.”
The Roodepoort operations resulted in the disruption of illegal mining and 11 people were arrested for possession of illegal mining equipment in Matholesville.
Sello said roadblocks were set in different roads throughout the province and scores of vehicles and people were searched.
“ Four unroadworthy vehicles were impounded and two stolen vehicles were recovered. R39 000-00 worth of fines were issued for contravention of the Road Traffic Act.”
“The impact brought by this highly intensified visibility and crime intelligence driven operation was greatly appreciated by the Provincial Commissioner. He applauded the zeal, enthusiasm and commitment shown by different law enforcement agencies and stakeholders throughout the entire operation,” added Sello.
