MAMMA MIA! RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA WITH STAR-STUDDED CAST

By Nomazulu Moyo

The hit musical Mamma Mia! is set to return to South African stages later this year, bringing a strong cast and a familiar story that has entertained audiences around the world.

The production marks its return after a two-year break and will run at the Artscape Opera House from 3 September to 11 October, before moving to the Teatro at Montecasino from 16 October until late November.

Leading the cast is Amra-Faye Wright, who returns to the local stage as Donna Sheridan. Wright is internationally known for her long-running role as Velma Kelly in Chicago The Musical, where she performed for more than two decades.

She will be joined by Samantha Peo as Tanya and Lindy Abromowitz as Rosie. The trio plays former bandmates in the fictional group “Donna and the Dynamos”.

Other cast members include Paul du Toit as Sam Carmichael, Tiaan Rautenbach as Bill Austin and Matt Newman as Harry Bright. Leah Mari takes on the role of Sophie Sheridan. The musical, written by Catherine Johnson, tells the story of a young woman who invites three men from her mother’s past to her wedding in the hope of finding out who her father is. The show features well-known songs by ABBA, including “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia”.

Producer Hazel Feldman said the production promises a feel-good experience. “ABBA’s music is timeless and the story is fun and upbeat. With such a strong cast and creative team, audiences can expect a great show,” she said. The musical is produced by Showtime Management, known for staging large international productions in the country.

An early bird discount of 20% is available for selected performances in September and October. Tickets are sold exclusively through Ticketmaster. Organisers said the show is suitable for a wide audience, with performances scheduled throughout the week and weekends
