Molapo residents plead for a library

Community members of Molapo in Soweto are pleading with the local councilor of Ward 34 to build the residents a library at Tirisano Primary School. The school hasn’t been operating for more than five years and residents made a petition to the local municipality to build a library for them since residents have to walk a distance to access a library.

Community leader Walter spoke to Gauteng News, “Councilor Shimane Motlhamme will be organizing a public meeting with the community to assure them that the space will be occupied. There are entrepreneurs who would like to run their businesses there and we will be having votes from community members in regards to the space”. Currently the school is owned by the department of Public Works and Gauteng News is informed the department is waiting for the next financial year to release funds for the requested library.

Brian Khoza is a community member in Molapo and he expressed his frustration about the abandoned space at Tirisano Primary School and how the youth needs access to a library to avoid drugs and alcohol. “We had a public meeting before with the councilor and we voted as a community that a library must be built, however, we heard a priest will be having a church on the abandoned space and that’s completely different to what we agreed on with the councilor”. Unemployment in Molapo and Rockville Soweto is rife and the youth pleads with the local municipality to build a facility that would be beneficial for everyone and contribute to decreasing drugs and unemployment.
