The Gauteng Provincial Government has placed nine senior officials in the Department of Health and Department of Infrastructure Development on precautionary suspension.
The suspension comes after the SIU uncovered serious irregularities in the awarding of contractors for the refurbishment of the Anglo Gold Ashanti Hospital in the West Rand.
The SIU has, has in terms of proclamation issued by President Cyril Ramaphosa in August 2020 been investigating allegations of irregularities and maladministration in the procurement of goods and services related to the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spokesperson for Gauteng premier, Vuyo Mhaga said, on December 2021 the SIU made referrals to the Gauteng government to institute disciplinary action against nine senior managers who were implicated in irregularities in awarding of contractors for the refurbishment of the Anglo Gold Ashanti Hospital.
“The SIU has also made referrals to other state institutions for further investigation into the conduct of the implicated officials and contractors.”
“Three senior managers in the Department of Health and six senior managers in the Department of Infrastructure Development were served with letters of suspension,” said Mhaga.
Meanwhile the Gauteng government has commended the SIU for the ongoing investigation and civil action to recover public funds.
“We continue to forge ahead with the fight against fraud and corruption,” added Mhaga.
