Based on the Elsa Joubert novel “The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena”, regarded as one of the best African novels of the twentieth century. Drawing back to the South African history, Poppie Nongena is an Afrikaans speaking Xhosa mother who is family orientated and finds herself living in tough times during the apartheid era.
Poppie’s husband, Stone, becomes very ill. He was the bread-winner and it was difficult for Poppie to provide for the family as she was regarded as an illegal citizen by the white government. The woman finds herself in a difficult situation as she was told to be a foreigner in her own country and attempted to prove her nationality, and struggled with authorities as she kept on moving from house to house in order to keep her family safe.
The movie goes back to the 1976 riots when Black people resisted against the racist system and its repressive laws.Poppie later finds herself fighting against the government and aims to protect her children and ill husband. The movie will showcase on 30th January 2020 on the big screens. Directed by Christiaan Olwagen and written by Saartjie Botha.
