A mother of three, broadcaster, entrepreneur and mentor – these are some on the hats 39-year-old Powerhouse SendraThembi Masiteng wears. When she is not in front of the microphone as co-host and newsreader on the breakfast show during weekdays from 06:00 to 09:00 at Cosmo FM in Cosmo City, she is running her beauty spa business Sendra’s Beauty Palace, located in Randburg where she employs four beauty therapists and offers treatments like manicures, pedicures, massages, facials and make-up for all occasions. “Iestablished my beauty business in 2007 and it was inspired by the love of beauty as well as unmployment at that time.
It gives me great joy that I did not only create employment for myself but I also managed to hire a small team that assists me in the business. Entrepreneurship has been a rewarding yet challenging journey for me, one of my challenges is the economic decline which forces people to tighten their belts and spend less on non-basic things, but there are still people who spoil themselves and at Sendra’s Beauty Palace we always have attractive specials” said Masiteng.
Sendra is involved in numerous community empowerment projects with her team, and a project that they are currently busy with particularly focuses on mentorship of young boys. They visit schools to talk to school kids, especially boys, “we are trying to reduce high rate of bullying in schools that sometimes leads to killing of learners and teachers. The mentorship program that started in March this year is supported by Naturena based Lentswe la Phetoho which does talks for inmates as well as for school kids, and our initiative with them is receiving positive response from the parents of the kids that we mentor” she concluded.
Masiteng aspires to work for a larger broadcaster in the future, but for now, she is appreciating the acknowledgement of her hard work as she has been nominated for Best Radio Presenter by the Golden Arts and Media Awards (Gama).
