Qhubeka charity in partnership with Volkswagen donated 350 bicycles to three schools in Soweto. This initiative lends a helping hand by providing less fortunate schoolchildren with bicycles to use when commuting to school. Qhubeka, which means ‘continue’, aims to help learners in accessing education and continuing to overcome social ills. The project was inspired by learners who travel long distances, by foot, to and from school.
The executive director of Qhubeka, Tsatsi Phaweni, added that, “donating bicycles to school learners provides a solution for those who might travel long distances just to access education.” Together Qhubeka and Volkswagen distributed 350 bicycles, in total, to learners from Lofentse Girls High, Orlando Secondary School and Bona Comprehensive School.
Qhubeka marketing manager, Linda, spoke to Gauteng News, “We donate bicycles to help children who live further away from school to access education and have the mobility to move to where they want. The team is currently donating more bicycles in Tzaneen, Limpopo”.
The challenges the NPO faces, however, includes bicycle theft and safety on the road which is why they came up with another campaign to raise awareness in the hope of getting motorists to accommodate cyclers.
